Paula J. Harrell is a trailblazing entrepreneur, community leader, and one of the first Black, Afro-Latina women winemakers in the industry. As the owner and proprietor of P. Harrell Wines, Paula’s journey into winemaking began in 2015, driven by a deep passion for the craft and a commitment to diversifying the wine industry. Her wines have earned numerous accolades, including Gold and Double Gold awards at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and Orange County Fair Wine Competition, and a Double Gold and Best of Class at the 2023 Sunset International Wine Competition. Paula has been featured in publications such as Essence, Entrepreneur, Forbes, Wine Enthusiast, and more. Her wines are even served on American Airlines, further cementing her influence in the wine world.

In addition to her winemaking achievements, Paula was named a Chase Center Taste Maker in 2019 and was a contributor to Spoons Consultancy: The Inside Scoop, where she shared her journey and insights. Her work continues to elevate the visibility of Black women entrepreneurs in the wine industry and beyond.

Paula’s mission is simple: to bring diversity, culture, and inclusivity to the wine industry. As a passionate educator and sought-after speaker, Paula inspires others to pursue their dreams, build legacies, and find success in unconventional ways, breaking barriers and challenging norms in every aspect of her work.

VINTNOIR is a wine and lifestyle brand born out of enthusiasm and love for wine. We are inspired by Black winemakers and dedicated to celebrating the diversity of wine with all consumers.

Founder, Nicole Mallari, was inspired to share the stories of BIPOC winemakers, negociants, merchants and industry professionals with wine enthusiasts. She decided to take a deeper dive into wine after discovering Black winemakers and earned the WSET 2 Award in Wine certification in 2019.

There are 11,000 wineries in the United States and less than 1% are Black Owned or have a Black winemaker. VINTNOIR's curated subscription box service features three mixed bottles from this exclusive yet underrepresented group of wine entrepreneurs. We also feature wines from brands who identify as Hispanic, Indigenous and more. All are in invited to share in the enjoyment of wine with us!

J. MOSS.png

Our dream was to create high quality, hand crafted, small lots of cabernet sauvignon from top Napa Valley appellations.  In vintage 2000, we made our first barrels from merlot grown on the Carneros property where we lived.  We knew we were on to something special!  For several more years, while working a full time job in the wine industry, James spent evenings and weekends learning the intricacies of winemaking.  James was fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside two phenomenal winemakers in the Valley;  Mark Jessup, former winemaker from Jessup Cellars, Robert Mondavi and Opus One and now winemaker at J. Gregory Wines, and subsequently with Gustavo Brambila, former winemaker for Chateau Montelena, Grgich Hills and now part owner/winemaker of Gustavo Wines.
